About this verse
This verse makes a single claim, and it is a claim about location: "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted." Not "the LORD will explain," not "the LORD will hurry things along" — near. The second half matches it: "He saves the contrite in spirit," the crushed. Notice what the broken heart is in this sentence. It is not a disqualification or a sign of weak faith; it is the address God moves toward.
David composed Psalm 34 after one of the least dignified escapes of his life. On the run from Saul, he fled into Philistine territory and got out of Gath alive only by pretending to be insane before its king. This is not a psalm written from a throne; it is a fugitive's psalm, from a man who had recently been both terrified and humiliated.

It answers the particular fear that hides inside sorrow — the fear that you are alone in it — with the one fact that changes the room: someone is close.
