Bible verses about a broken heart

Heartbreak is a real wound, and scripture treats it like one. God does not scold the brokenhearted — he moves toward them.

Nobody searches for bible verses for a broken heart casually. Something ended — a relationship, an engagement, a marriage, a hope you had already built a future on — and the pain is physical enough that 'broken' feels less like a metaphor than a diagnosis. Scripture does not treat heartbreak as drama. It treats it as a wound God personally attends: "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit" (Psalm 34:18).

Sit with the companion verse for a moment: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3). Binding a wound is slow, hands-on work — cleaning, wrapping, returning to check it. That is the Bible's picture of how God handles a broken heart. Not a lecture about how you should be over it by now. A long tending.

What does the Bible say about heartbreak and rejection specifically? It says God has a startling preference for the broken: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise" (Psalm 51:17). Whatever rejection you have just absorbed, the brokenness it left is not repulsive to God — it is precisely what he refuses to turn away. And when Jesus announced his own mission, he put you in it explicitly: "He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted" (Isaiah 61:1). You are not an edge case. You are in the job description.

There will be days the sadness outmatches you. Psalm 73:26 was written for those: "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." When your own heart fails, God volunteers to be its strength — a sentence you can pray verbatim at 2 a.m.

Two honest words for the road. First: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted" (Matthew 5:4) — mourning is allowed; you do not have to perform being fine. Second: healing from heartbreak is gradual, and eating, sleeping, and telling a friend the truth are spiritual acts right now. See also grief, comfort, and loneliness.

What part of this heartbreak have you been carrying alone that you could hand to God tonight — by name?
