About this verse

On its face this is a contradiction: "Blessed are those who mourn." Fortunate are the grieving? The sentence only resolves in its second half — "for they will be comforted" — and even there the wording is careful. The verb is passive; the mourners do not comfort themselves, and no human agent is named. It is what grammarians call a divine passive: God is the comforter, unnamed but unmistakable.

This is the second Beatitude, from the opening of the Sermon on the Mount, spoken by Jesus to crowds on a Galilean hillside. The Beatitudes are an inverted honors list — the kingdom's announcement of who is actually fortunate, and it is nobody the world would nominate: the poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek. Mourning here is wide enough to include grief over loss and grief over sin and the state of the world.

Notice what the verse does not say: blessed are those who move on quickly, who keep it together, who look on the bright side. It pronounces blessing on the mourning itself, which dignifies it — grief is not a malfunction of faith but a condition comfort is promised to. If you are mourning, you are not disqualified. You are in the announced company.
