Miscarriage and pregnancy loss are among the most under-acknowledged forms of grief in our culture. Scripture takes the personhood of the child seriously — Psalm 139:13-16 describes God knitting a person together in the womb and writing their days in his book "when as yet there was none of them." The baby you lost is not a possibility you outlived. They were known, named, and loved by God before they were ever known to you.
2 Samuel 12:22-23 holds one of scripture's gentlest hopes for parents who have lost a young child. David, mourning his infant son, says, "I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me." Christian tradition has read this verse as the confidence of reunion with children too young to come to faith.
Matthew 5:4 — "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted" — is for you. Revelation 21:4 names what is coming: "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow." Romans 8:38-39 promises that nothing can separate us — including this — from God's love in Christ.
Practical: let yourself name the baby if naming feels right. Mark anniversaries. Find a counselor who specializes in perinatal grief. Don't let well-meaning people minimize the loss ("at least it was early," "you'll have another"). The grief deserves the time it takes. See also grief, infertility, and comfort.
Verses
Psalms 139:13-16
For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be.
2 Samuel 12:22-23
David answered, “While the child was alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let him live.’ But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”
Psalms 34:18
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
Matthew 5:4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Revelation 21:4
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
Romans 8:38-39
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Reflection
Have you let yourself say goodbye to the child you were already loving?
