Bible verses about loneliness

Loneliness is one of the deepest aches a person can carry. Scripture does not shame it — it answers it with the promise of presence.

Loneliness is one of the most underestimated kinds of pain. The Surgeon General has called it a public-health crisis; the Bible has called it serious for centuries. Genesis 2:18 contains the first thing God ever called "not good" — "it is not good that the man should be alone." Loneliness is not weakness. It is being out of step with how God made you.

Scripture's most-quoted comfort verse for loneliness is Deuteronomy 31:6 (echoed in Hebrews 13:5): "He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee." Whatever the human absence in your life, the divine presence is steady. Psalm 27:10 carries a particularly tender word for the abandoned: "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up." If your family of origin has not been a safe place, scripture knows that, and God names himself as the parent who stays.

Jesus' last word to his disciples before his ascension was "lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world" (Matthew 28:20). And Psalm 68:6 contains one of God's most beautiful descriptions of his own work: "God setteth the solitary in families." If you are isolated, scripture frames part of the answer as God's project, not yours alone — he places people.

Practical: loneliness is reduced by small, repeated, low-risk reach-outs more than by grand gestures. Show up to the same place twice a week — a church small group, a hobby, a class — and let acquaintance turn into friendship over months. Don't wait to be invited; invite. If loneliness has lasted long, please consider therapy — depression and loneliness often run together and respond well to care. See also community, friendship, and grief.
