If you found this page because your spouse has been unfaithful, scripture takes what you are carrying seriously. Malachi 2 — one of the Bible's strongest statements on marriage — describes God as a witness against the unfaithful spouse and protective of the betrayed one. "The Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away." God is not casual about covenant betrayal.
Psalm 34:18 may be the most-needed verse in this moment: "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." Psalm 147:3 promises that he heals the brokenhearted and binds their wounds. These are not platitudes — they are God's named work for people in exactly your situation.
Hosea is the Old Testament's longest meditation on this pain. The prophet is told to marry a woman who will betray him, as a living picture of God's faithfulness to a faithless people. The book moves through anger, grief, and ultimately a possibility of restoration — but not without honest reckoning. Hosea 2 names both the consequences and the door God opens for return.
Practical wisdom from Christian counselors and pastoral care: you do not have to decide everything today. Tell one trusted person who is for both your marriage and your safety. See a licensed counselor if you can — for yourself first, then together if both of you are willing. Reconciliation is possible but never required for healing. If there is ongoing deception, addiction, or abuse, talk to a pastor and counselor about what protections you need. See also divorce, marriage, and forgiveness.
Verses
Psalms 34:18
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Psalms 147:3
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
Malachi 2:13-16
And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand. Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
Isaiah 61:1-3
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
Hosea 2:14-20
Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt. And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call me Ishi; and shalt call me no more Baali. For I will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name. And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely. And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the LORD.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
