Forgiveness is one of the most commanded and least understood subjects in scripture. Jesus puts it at the center of his own prayer: "forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors" (Matthew 6:12). He repeats it: if you do not forgive, neither will your Father forgive you (Matthew 6:14-15). Few Christian teachings are more bracing.
What does the Bible say about forgiveness — and how do you actually do it — are different questions, and scripture answers both. The motive is established in Ephesians 4:32: "forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." You forgive because you have been forgiven. The pattern is established in Colossians 3:13: "forbearing one another, and forgiving one another." The duration is established in Luke 17:3-4: seventy times seven, every day, every time.
What forgiveness is not, scripture is also clear about. It is not pretending the wound did not happen. It is not reconciliation, which requires both parties and trust over time. It is not excusing — it is releasing your right to repay. Romans 12:19 names where vengeance belongs: "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." That is the freedom that forgiveness gives you — you do not have to be the judge.
Forgiving a deep wound is usually not a one-time decision. It is a thousand decisions, made over months or years, every time the memory returns. Each time, you bring it back to God and say again, "I release this." 1 John 1:9 is the matching word for your own conscience: confession leads to forgiveness and cleansing. Bring the name to God.
