22 Bible verses about anger

Scripture does not treat anger as the same thing as sin. It asks us to be honest about it, slow about it, and unwilling to let it own us.

Nobody searches for bible verses about anger on a calm day. You come here after the door slammed — after the message you regret sending, the words you can't take back, the argument that left someone in tears. Or you come because anger has moved in long-term: a low, constant burn toward a person who hurt you, and you are tired of carrying it. Scripture takes anger seriously without shaming you for feeling it, and this page collects 22 verses grouped by theme — slowing anger down, responding when you've been wronged, releasing it before it hardens, and the patience God keeps showing us.

Start with scripture's most surprising instruction: "“Be angry, yet do not sin.” Do not let the sun set upon your anger, and do not give the devil a foothold" (Ephesians 4:26-27). Anger itself is not named as the sin — some of the Bible's fiercest anger is God's own, at injustice. The danger is what unattended anger becomes overnight: a foothold, then a fortress. Psalm 4:4 gives the same command for the sleepless hours: "on your bed, search your heart and be still."

What does the Bible say about anger as a daily habit? That speed decides almost everything. "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires" (James 1:19-20). "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1) — which means the next sentence out of your mouth is usually the fork in the road. The verses under Slow to anger, including Proverbs 16:32 and Ecclesiastes 7:9, all press the same point: the person who can wait five minutes nearly always ends up wiser than the person who couldn't.

Anger at real injustice is the hardest kind, because it feels righteous — and sometimes is. Scripture never tells you the wrong didn't matter. It tells you who settles accounts: Romans 12:19 and Proverbs 24:29, under When you've been wronged, move revenge out of your hands and into God's, where it can be carried without corroding you. And "A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man promotes folly" (Proverbs 14:29) — patience is not passivity; it is strength that has learned to wait.

The deepest cure for anger is remembering how God handles his. Psalm 103:8, Exodus 34:6, and Jonah 4:2 all repeat the Old Testament's favorite self-description of God: compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. You have been on the receiving end of that patience more times than you know. Colossians 3:8 asks you to put anger off like an old coat — not because it wasn't real, but because it no longer fits who you are becoming. See also forgiveness, patience, and self-control.
