Marriage in scripture is treated as covenant, not contract. Genesis 2:24 — "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh" — is repeated by Jesus in Matthew 19 and by Paul in Ephesians 5. The biblical picture of marriage is two people fused into a new whole, on purpose, with weight.
Ephesians 5:25-33 is the New Testament's longest marriage passage. Husbands are commanded to love their wives "even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it" — sacrificially, daily, on the model of someone who died for the other. Wives are commanded to respect and partner with their husbands. The mutual submission of 5:21 frames the whole passage. 1 Corinthians 13's description of love — patient, kind, not envying, not boasting, not easily provoked — is the practical curriculum.
What scripture is honest about: marriage will surface every weakness in both of you. The first sin in Eden produced the first marriage conflict ("the woman whom thou gavest to be with me…"). Conflict is not a sign of a failed marriage. Avoiding it is. Colossians 3:13 names the practice that sustains every marriage long-term: forbearing and forgiving one another. Every day, both directions.
Practical: marriages thrive on small repeated acts of kindness and on shared submission to something larger than either spouse — for a Christian marriage, to Christ together. Verses
Ephesians 5:25-33
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
Colossians 3:18-19
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
1 Peter 3:7
Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Proverbs 31:10-12
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
Genesis 2:24
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
