Bible verses about after an abortion

If you are carrying grief, regret, or trauma from an abortion, scripture meets you with the same words it offers anyone in pain: God is near, healing is possible, and you are not beyond forgiveness.

If you came to this page carrying grief or regret from an abortion, please read what scripture actually says before listening to the voices that have told you otherwise. The Bible's word for you, exactly here, is not condemnation. It is invitation.

Romans 8:1 is unambiguous: "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus." 1 John 1:9 is direct: confession leads to faithful and just forgiveness — and cleansing from all unrighteousness. Not some. All. Psalm 103:12 says God removes our transgressions "as far as the east is from the west." Isaiah 1:18 — "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow." These verses are not about abortion specifically. They are about every category of past, every depth of regret, every unspoken thing.

The grief side of this — the loss of the child you didn't carry, or did carry briefly — is real grief and deserves to be named. Psalm 34:18 — the Lord near the brokenhearted. Isaiah 61:1-3 — beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning. The healing is real and takes time.

Practical: please consider Project Rachel (Catholic — open to all), Support After Abortion (1-844-289-4673), or a trauma-informed counselor familiar with this specific grief. The shame that has kept you silent is not from God. You are not the only one carrying this; many sit beside you in church each Sunday. See also grief, forgiveness, and shame.

Isaiah 61:1-3

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of our God’s vengeance, to comfort all who mourn, to console the mourners in Zion— to give them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.
