Berean Standard Bible
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!
King James Version
It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
About this verse
"They are new every morning" is the phrase to slow down on. The verse does not describe a stockpile of mercy laid up somewhere; it describes a delivery schedule. "Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail" — and the proof of their not failing is that a fresh supply arrives daily, like manna.
These lines sit at the exact center of Lamentations, five funeral poems over the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC, traditionally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah — a man who watched his city burn and his people marched into exile. The Bible's most beloved words about faithfulness were not written on a good day. They were written in the ashes, by someone who had counted what was lost and still concluded, "great is Your faithfulness!"
The hymn "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" comes from this passage, which is why it turns up at funerals and anniversaries alike. Its daily logic is the practical part: you do not need enough mercy for the rest of your life tonight. You need enough for today, and today's has been delivered. Tomorrow's arrives tomorrow morning.
