Usually it starts with a card — a birthday card that deserves more than 'have a great one,' a text to send before the party, a toast for a milestone year. People look up bible verses for birthdays because the day itself asks for words with some weight, and scripture's readiest offer was made for the morning of: "This is the day that the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalm 118:24). Every day qualifies, but a birthday is the one day most of us actually stop to rejoice that we were given any days at all.
The deepest birthday verse in the Bible was written about the days before every birthday: "I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14). And then this, which turns a birthday from a milestone into a kept promise: "all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be" (Psalm 139:16). The person you are celebrating was planned — every year of them, including the one that starts today.
What does the Bible say about birthdays as such? Curiously little — the only two birthday parties scripture records both ended badly, which is perhaps a nudge that the day matters less than the count. The verse for the count is Psalm 90:12: "So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom." A birthday is the built-in annual audit: another year received — spent on what?
For the card itself, the oldest blessing in the Bible has never been improved on: "May the LORD bless you and keep you; may the LORD cause His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the LORD lift up His countenance toward you and give you peace" (Numbers 6:24-26). Write it out in full; it reads like what it is — a blessing spoken over someone by name. And Lamentations 3:22-23 blesses the year ahead one day at a time: God's mercies "are new every morning" — including every morning of the year your birthday person is about to receive.
Add their name and one specific thing you thank God for about them, and you have written a better birthday blessing than anything store-bought. See also gratitude, God's love, and purpose.
