Bible verses about hope

Hope is one of the most-searched themes on Christian Bible apps — partly because it is the most necessary, partly because hope itself feels so scarce when you most need it. The Bible's hope is not optimism, and it is not wishful thinking. It is a settled confidence in what is true, regardless of what is felt.

Romans 15:13 contains scripture's clearest petition for hope: "Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost." Notice the order — God himself is the source, faith is the means, and the Spirit is the power. Hope is not something you generate. It is something you receive.

Jeremiah 29:11 — "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end" — was written to a people in exile, not in comfort. The hope it offers is for the hardest seasons, not the easiest. Romans 5:3-5 connects hope to suffering directly: "tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope." Hope that has cost something is sturdier than hope that has not.

Hebrews 11:1 names what hope feels like: "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Lamentations 3:22-23 gives the daily anchor: "It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." Hope is renewed at sunrise.

If hope feels gone, scripture invites you not to manufacture it but to keep showing up where God promises to meet you — in his Word, in prayer, in his people. Hope often returns sideways. See also faith, joy, and perseverance.
