Most people who look up bible verses about faith are not doing theology homework. They are standing at the edge of something — a diagnosis, a decision, a prayer that has not been answered — and wondering whether their faith is big enough for it. Scripture's answer is surprisingly gentle: faith is not the absence of questions, and its power was never in its size. The Bible's own definition comes first: "Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see" (Hebrews 11:1). Not certainty about everything — assurance about Someone. "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6). Faith, at bottom, is approaching God expecting him to be good.
What does the Bible say about faith that feels too small? Jesus answered that directly: "if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move" (Matthew 17:20). The power is not in the quantity of your faith but in the object of it. The verses under When faith is small — Luke 17:5-6, Matthew 14:29-31 — keep company with strugglers, and scripture's most honest prayer belongs beside them: "I do believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24).
Faith also grows and works. "Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ" (Romans 10:17) — which means faith is fed, not conjured; time in scripture is how it eats. And James insists faith must move your hands and feet: "So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead" (James 2:17). The verses under Faith that acts, like Hebrews 11:8 and Galatians 5:6, show what trust looks like when it starts walking.
And yet salvation never rests on the strength of your believing: "For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8-9). Faith is the open hand, not the wage. If yours feels thin tonight, bring the thin version — 2 Corinthians 5:7 calls the whole Christian life walking by faith, not by sight, and walking only ever requires the next step.
