Proverbs 3:5-6

About this verse

The key image is structural: leaning. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding." The verse never says don't use your understanding — the whole book of Proverbs exists to sharpen it. It says don't lean on it: don't make your own analysis the load-bearing wall of your life. Trust is a question of where the weight goes.

These lines come from the opening section of Proverbs, chapters 1–9, framed as a father's counsel to his son and gathered in Israel's wisdom tradition associated with Solomon. The father is not raising a mystic who ignores facts; he is raising a son who thinks hard and rests his full weight somewhere sturdier than his own conclusions. "In all your ways acknowledge Him" — all of them, including the ordinary ones nobody prays about.

This is the verse people reach for at forks in the road: the offer, the move, the relationship, the diagnosis with three treatment options. Its promise is worded carefully — "He will make your paths straight." Straight does not mean easy or obstacle-free; it means the path actually leads somewhere. The alternative, paths engineered entirely by our own understanding, tends to wander.
