About this verse
"For we are God’s workmanship" — the Greek word is poiema, a made thing, the root from which English gets "poem." You are a composition, not an accident. And the works were "prepared in advance as our way of life": the good you are meant to do is not a debt you must invent and discharge, but a path already laid, waiting to be walked. Way of life is the humble part — a walk, daily and ordinary, not a highlight reel.
Placement is the argument. This verse follows immediately after the Bible's clearest denial that works save anyone — "not by works, so that no one can boast." Paul, writing to the church at Ephesus, holds both truths in sequence, and the sequence is the theology: you are not saved by good works, and you are absolutely saved for them. Workmanship first, works second. Get the order backwards and you get either exhaustion or pride.
For the reader circling questions of purpose: this verse answers the anxiety underneath them. You are not the artisan of your own worth, frantically justifying your existence by output. You are the artifact — and this maker does not make ornaments. The works prepared for you are likely nearer and plainer than the dramatic calling you were scanning the horizon for.
