Bible verses about graduation

There is a graduation card on the counter waiting to be signed, or a gift Bible with a blank flyleaf, or a kid — yours, maybe — about to walk a stage into a future nobody can see from here. Searches for bible verses for graduation spike every spring for that exact reason, and one verse has become the season's unofficial anthem: "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope" (Jeremiah 29:11). Worth knowing as you write it: God first said that to people entering a long, uncertain stretch far from home. It is not a promise that the next chapter will be easy. It is a promise that it is already planned by someone good.

What does the Bible say about graduation moments — thresholds where the map runs out? Its steadiest counsel fits on a mortarboard and takes a lifetime to learn: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6). A graduate's own understanding just received years of formal investment — and scripture still says it is not load-bearing enough to build a life on. Trust is.

For the graduate who is more scared than they are letting on, Joshua 1:9 was spoken to a man taking over the biggest job of his life: "Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9). Wherever you go covers the dorm, the first job, the new city where they know no one.

And for the diploma's fine print, Philippians 1:6: "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Commencement literally means beginning — the work God started in your graduate is still early, and he does not abandon projects.
