About this verse

"I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength" may be the most-quoted verse in sports — eye black, gym walls, graduation caps — where it usually means Christ guarantees achievement. But read the sentence in its paragraph and "all things" has a specific antecedent: the circumstances Paul has just listed. "I know how to live humbly, and I know how to abound... to being filled and being hungry, to having plenty and having need." The all things are situations to be endured, not feats to be performed.

Paul writes from a Roman imprisonment, closing a thank-you note for a gift, and the sentence before this one says it plainly: "I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances." Verse 13 is the secret behind that education — the strength Christ supplies is the strength to stay steady when circumstances swing violently in either direction.

Read rightly, the verse is better than the poster version, not weaker. The poster version fails the first time you lose — and everyone loses. The real promise survives losing seasons, because it never depended on winning: there is no situation, including the loss, the diagnosis, the empty account, and the prison cell it was written in, that Christ's strength cannot carry you through.
