Bible verses about the cross

Why did Jesus have to die? People arrive at bible verses about the cross from a Good Friday service, an old hymn, or the blunter personal question: what does an execution two thousand years ago have to do with my life now? Paul concedes up front that the answer looks absurd from the outside: "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18). Foolishness or power — scripture offers no third shelf.

Seven centuries before the crucifixion, Isaiah described it with unsettling precision: "But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5). Every preposition is carrying weight. Pierced for our transgressions. The punishment upon Him. The cross is substitution — the innocent one standing in the place of the guilty, absorbing what we had earned so we could receive what we had not.

What does the Bible say about the cross actually accomplishing? Two pictures. First, a carrying: "He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness" (1 Peter 2:24). Your sin was not overlooked or excused; it was borne. Second, a canceling: God took "the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us. He took it away, nailing it to the cross!" (Colossians 2:14). In the ancient world, a canceled debt was nailed up publicly for all to see. That is the image — your record, posted as paid.

The cross also settles the question of motive, permanently. "But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Not after we improved. While. And Paul shrinks the whole doctrine down to the size of one life, describing Jesus as the Son of God who loved him and gave himself up for him — singular, personal, by name (Galatians 2:20). The cross is not only cosmic; it is addressed.

If you take this personally, take all of it: the debt is canceled, not restructured. Nothing in your past requires a second payment, and nothing in your future can reopen the account. That is what Christians mean when they call that Friday good. See also salvation, grace, and God's love.
