Repentance is one of the most misunderstood words in scripture. The Greek metanoia literally means a change of mind — and the biblical picture is not endless self-flagellation but a turn. You were walking one way; you stop, you face the other direction, and you begin walking toward God. Acts 3:19 names the consequence: "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out."
Scripture distinguishes two kinds of sorrow. 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 names them: godly sorrow leads to repentance and life; worldly sorrow leads to death. The difference is direction. Godly sorrow says "I have hurt the one I love; I want to be made new." Worldly sorrow says "I got caught; I feel terrible about myself." Only the first actually turns.
Psalm 51 — David's prayer after his sin with Bathsheba — is the Bible's longest written model of repentance. It is honest, specific, and ends in hope. 1 John 1:9 carries the New Testament promise: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." The prodigal son's father runs to meet him (Luke 15:20). That image — God running to meet the one who turns — is what repentance ushers you into.

Luke 15:17-24
Finally he came to his senses and said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have plenty of food? But here I am, starving to death! I will get up and go back to my father and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’ So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. The son declared, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!’ So they began to celebrate.
Joel 2:12-13
“Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning.” So rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending disaster.
