Bible verses about kindness

Kindness has a reputation problem — it sounds optional, decorative, the personality trait of people who are simply wired gentle. The Bible disagrees. When scripture lists the evidence that God's Spirit is actually at work in a person, kindness is on the list: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23). People search for bible verses about kindness to teach children or to find a caption, but the verses themselves are more demanding than decorative.

The command is anchored, like most New Testament commands, in what God has already done: "Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32). You are not asked to manufacture kindness from scratch — you are asked to pass along what you have received. Colossians 3:12 uses the image of getting dressed: "clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." Kindness is something you deliberately put on in the morning, especially on days it does not fit.

What does the Bible say about kindness toward people who do not deserve it? That is precisely where it stops being niceness. "Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return... for He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked" (Luke 6:35). God's kindness is not a reward for good behavior — it is his character, extended even to those mid-rebellion. Kindness that only flows toward the deserving is just an exchange rate.

Scripture even makes the shrewd observation that kindness is good for the one giving it: "A kind man benefits himself, but a cruel man brings trouble on himself" (Proverbs 11:17). Cruelty corrodes its container. Kindness, meanwhile, sits at the center of the Bible's greatest chapter on love: "Love is patient, love is kind" (1 Corinthians 13:4). Of all the things love could be first, it is patient and kind.
