20 Bible verses about humility

Humility is not thinking less of yourself — it is thinking of yourself less. Scripture treats it as the soil where every other virtue grows.

People search for bible verses about humility from odd angles — after being told they're arrogant, before giving a talk on servant leadership, or in the middle of an argument they suspect they need to lose. Humility has a marketing problem: it sounds like thinking you're worthless. Scripture means something sturdier — an accurate view of yourself under God, and the habit of putting others before yourself. This page collects 20 verses grouped by theme: the way down being the way up, the humility of Jesus himself, the company God keeps, and humility practiced with the people around you.

The New Testament's greatest humility passage is not advice; it is a portrait. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves" (Philippians 2:3-8) — and then Paul points at Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, "humbled Himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross." Christian humility is not low self-esteem. It is the deliberate downward mobility of the most secure person who ever lived, offered as a pattern: let this mind be in you.

What does the Bible say about humility and pride? Both Testaments repeat one line like a drumbeat: "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6-10). Opposition or grace — that is the actual choice on the table. Peter turns it into a posture: "clothe yourselves with humility toward one another" (1 Peter 5:5-6), and humble yourself under God's mighty hand "so that in due time He may exalt you." Jesus states the physics of the kingdom flatly: "For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted" (Matthew 23:11-12). Self-promotion and God-promotion run on opposite schedules.

Humility is also, surprisingly, where God says he lives. The verses under The company God keeps — Isaiah 57:15, Psalm 138:6, Isaiah 66:2 — all say the high and holy One attends to the lowly. The proud get his resistance; the humble get his address. Micah compresses the whole walk of faith into three phrases: "to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). And lest humility sound like losing, Proverbs attaches an outcome: "The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life" (Proverbs 22:4).

Practically, humility is trained in small, concrete moves: take the lower seat before you're asked (Luke 14:8-11), let someone else praise you or no one (Proverbs 27:2), assume the person across the argument knows something you don't (Romans 12:3). Pray the tax collector's prayer from Luke 18:9-14 and mean it. Do one hidden act of service this week and tell no one. The way down, scripture keeps promising, turns out to be the way up. Key verses

Philippians 2:3-8

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross.

James 4:6-10

But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter to mourning, and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.

The way down is the way up

Luke 14:8-11

“When you are invited to a wedding banquet, do not sit in the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited. Then the host who invited both of you will come and tell you, ‘Give this man your seat.’ And in humiliation, you will have to take the last place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the last place, so that your host will come and tell you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in front of everyone at the table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Luke 18:9-14

To some who trusted in their own righteousness and viewed others with contempt, He also told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like the other men—swindlers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and pay tithes of all that I acquire.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance, unwilling even to lift up his eyes to heaven. Instead, he beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man, rather than the Pharisee, went home justified. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
