"Judge not, that ye be not judged" (Matthew 7:1) may be the most quoted — and most misused — verse in the Bible. People search bible verses about judging others from both sides: some stung by someone else's condemnation, others convicted about their own critical spirit. Scripture speaks to both, and it is more nuanced than the bumper-sticker version.
In Matthew 7:1-5 Jesus is not forbidding all moral discernment; he is confronting hypocrisy. His image is unforgettable: why do you notice "the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" The problem is not caring about right and wrong — it is the blindness of judging someone else's small fault while ignoring the log in your own. The remedy is to "first cast out the beam" from your own eye. Deal with yourself first, and you will see clearly enough to help rather than condemn.
What does the Bible say about judging others once your own heart is honest? Luke 6:37 ties it to mercy: "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged... forgive, and ye shall be forgiven." Romans 2:1 delivers the sharpest warning: "thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things." The measure we use gets used on us.
John 8:7 shows Jesus applying this to a real crowd ready to stone a woman: "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." One by one, they left. And James 4:12 reminds us who actually holds the office of judge: "there is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?" The seat of judgment is occupied — and it isn't by us.
