Bible verses about family

Family is one of God's first gifts and one of his hardest assignments. Scripture meets it with both high ideals and deep grace.

Family is where we are first loved and first wounded, which is why bible verses about family draw so many searches. Scripture is realistic about it. The very first family had a murder in it; the patriarchs' households were full of favoritism, rivalry, and heartbreak. The Bible does not present a polished ideal — it offers grace for real homes.

Joshua 24:15 is the anchor verse, a decision more than a description: "as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." It names the spiritual center a household can be built around. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 makes faith a daily, ordinary thing — talked about "when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way." Psalm 127:3 reframes children as "an heritage of the Lord," a gift rather than a burden.

Scripture is also specific about the relationships inside a home. Ephesians 6:1-4 and Colossians 3:18-21 give instructions to children, parents, husbands, and wives — and notably, they cut both ways. Children are to honor; fathers are told, "provoke not your children to wrath." Proverbs 22:6 — "Train up a child in the way he should go" — has comforted countless parents, especially those praying for a child who has wandered. 1 Timothy 5:8 names the seriousness of providing for "his own, and specially for those of his own house."

And Psalm 133:1 holds out the goal: "how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" — a unity scripture treats as worth working and praying toward, not assuming.

If your family is a source of joy, these verses give words of gratitude. If it is a source of pain, they offer a place to bring it honestly to God. See also parenting, marriage, and honoring parents.

But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”

Psalms 127:3-5

Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. He will not be put to shame when he confronts the enemies at the gate.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (which is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on the earth.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath; instead, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
