Bible verses about parenting

Parenting will surface every weakness you have. Scripture asks God to be a parent to parents — patient, faithful, and slow to anger.

Parenting is one of the most-searched topics in Christian forums, and one of the most exhausting vocations in scripture. The Bible does not romanticize it. From Adam and Eve burying Abel to David weeping for Absalom to Mary watching her son crucified, parents in scripture carry real weight.

Proverbs 22:6 is the most-quoted parenting verse: "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Read carefully: this is a proverb, not a guarantee. The Hebrew suggests training a child in accordance with who they actually are — their bent, gifts, temperament — not forcing them into a uniform mold. The hope is real; the formula is not magic.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 is the broader vision of Christian parenting — the words of God woven into the texture of ordinary family life: when you sit down, when you walk, when you lie down, when you rise up. Faith is caught more than taught, and it is caught in the small rhythms of how parents live in front of their children.

Ephesians 6:4 contains a balance often missed: "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." Discipline and tenderness together. Colossians 3:21 puts it sharply: "Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged."

James 1:5 is the parent's prayer: ask God for wisdom. You will need it daily. If your child is rebelling, lost, or estranged, scripture also knows the prodigal — and the father who waited and watched. See also patience, wisdom, and family estrangement.

Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. He will not be put to shame when he confronts the enemies at the gate.
