About this verse

Two words set the boundaries and two words set the scale. The boundary: "my God will supply all your needs" — needs, not wants; the promise is provision, not accumulation. The scale: "according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus." According to, not "out of." A billionaire who hands you five dollars has given out of his riches; giving according to them means the supply is proportioned to the wealth behind it. The measure of provision is God's resources, not your circumstances.

Context sharpens it further. This is the close of Paul's thank-you note from prison, and the promise is spoken over givers. The Philippian church was not wealthy, yet they had sent Paul support repeatedly — the letter says they were the only church that did in the early days. The people being promised supplied needs were people who had just emptied something for someone else.

The verse gets stretched into a blank check for prosperity, which its wording will not underwrite. But what it actually promises is sturdy: for the reader afraid there won't be enough — especially the one whose generosity created the gap — the supply line runs back to riches that do not fluctuate.
