Waiting may be the most universal spiritual struggle nobody preaches about. The test results, the prodigal child, the spouse who hasn't come, the door that will not open — people search for bible verses about waiting on God because the silence has stretched longer than their endurance. Scripture's most famous answer contains a promise hidden in plain sight: "But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint" (Isaiah 40:31). The waiting itself is where the strength gets renewed. It is not the obstacle to what God is doing. It is frequently the site of it.
What does the Bible say about God's timing when it feels simply wrong? Habakkuk asked exactly that, out loud, and God's reply is one of scripture's steadiest sentences: "For the vision awaits an appointed time... Though it lingers, wait for it, since it will surely come and will not delay" (Habakkuk 2:3). Lingers and will not delay sit in the same verse on purpose. Delayed by your clock is not delayed by his. "To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven" (Ecclesiastes 3:1) — and you cannot rush a season; you can only be faithful in it.
The Psalms give waiting a posture. "Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous. Wait patiently for the LORD!" (Psalm 27:14) — waiting as courage, not passivity. "Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when men prosper in their ways" (Psalm 37:7) — waiting without scoreboard-watching other people's answered prayers. And Lamentations 3:25-26 makes the quiet promise underneath it all: "The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him."
Practically: waiting on God is active. Keep praying the worn-out prayer. Keep doing the last thing he made clear. And keep a record — most of us can only see God's timing in the rearview mirror, where it has a way of looking suspiciously perfect. See also patience, trust, and hope.
