The night before the cross, Jesus spent part of his final prayer on this — praying explicitly for people who would believe later, which includes you: "that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. What does the Bible say about unity as a practice? First, that it is preserved, not manufactured. Second, that unity is not uniformity: "Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but enjoy the company of the lowly" (Romans 12:16). Harmony requires different notes. Then scripture names the binding agent. After listing compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and forgiveness, Paul adds: "And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity" (Colossians 3:14). Love is what makes the other virtues hold together under stress. Groups do not usually shatter from disagreement; they shatter from disagreement without love.

Unity is rebuilt in small, unglamorous moves: refuse to repeat the story that inflames, ask the direct question instead of assuming, speak well of someone on the other side of the split, apologize for your exact share.
