Pet loss is real grief, and scripture does not embarrass it. God called every part of creation good in Genesis 1, named the animals as company before any human partner (Genesis 2), and through Proverbs 12:10 specifically commends those who are kind to animals: "A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast."
Jesus' image in Matthew 10:29 — that not a sparrow falls to the ground without your Father's notice — is offered as comfort to the disciples about their own value, but it also says something about the value of creatures. God notices. Psalm 36:6 says God preserves both man and beast.
Romans 8:19-22 names the deeper hope: the whole creation, including the animals, groans for its own redemption, and will be set free from corruption in the renewal of all things. Isaiah 11 paints the picture — the wolf and the lamb dwelling together, the lion eating straw like the ox, harmony restored. Whether you will see your particular dog or cat in the new creation, scripture doesn't make explicit, but it does not foreclose the possibility.
If you've just lost a pet, take the grief seriously. They were part of the texture of your life. Many people find a private ritual helpful — a buried collar, a planted shrub, a written note. Don't let anyone hurry you through it. See also grief and comfort.
