Bible verses about healing

Healing is real in scripture, and it is complicated. God heals. Sometimes the healing comes through doctors and time. Sometimes the deepest healing is the one we didn't know we needed.

Few searches carry more weight than what does the Bible say about healing, and few are more carefully answered by scripture itself. The Bible affirms physical healing, emotional healing, and spiritual healing without confusing them. Isaiah 53:5 sits at the center of the Christian understanding: "with his stripes we are healed" — the verse Peter quotes in 1 Peter 2:24 to speak of healing from the wound of sin first and foremost.

Scripture also commands prayer for the sick directly. James 5:14-16 calls the elders to anoint and pray over the suffering, and ties healing to confession and to the prayer of the righteous. Jesus' ministry is full of physical healings (Matthew 9:35) — and equally full of moments where he heals the heart before the body. Psalm 147:3 names a healing many people miss: he heals the brokenhearted and binds their wounds.

What scripture doesn't promise is a formula. Paul prayed three times for a thorn in his flesh and was given grace instead (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Job's friends got the formula wrong. The faithful in Hebrews 11 were healed; others were sawn in two. Healing is real and uneven, and God remains good through both outcomes.

Pray for healing. Pray boldly. And bring the deeper need too — the fear, the bitterness, the loneliness underneath the diagnosis. The page below offers a written prayer that names both. See also illness, suffering, and hope.

Isaiah 53:4-5

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

James 5:14-16

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

What kind of healing are you really asking for — and what would it look like to bring even the unspoken part to God?
