Bible verses about end times

Scripture is honest that history is going somewhere — and equally clear that the day is unknown and our job is faithfulness, not prediction.

What does the Bible say about the end times rises in search volume every time international tension spikes, and scripture's posture is more sober than the news cycle suggests. Jesus' single most repeated note on the timing is Matthew 24:36 — "of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." The next verse warns to watch and be ready — not to predict.

The New Testament's actual instructions about the end are practical, not speculative. Acts 1:6-8 records the disciples asking Jesus when he would restore the kingdom; he answers that the times are not for them to know, and pivots them to mission — "ye shall be witnesses unto me." 2 Peter 3:8-13 reminds us that God's apparent delay is mercy, giving time for repentance, and then calls for holy and godly lives.

Where Christians genuinely differ: pre-millennial vs. amillennial frameworks, the rapture, the role of Israel, the timing of tribulation. These are not minor differences, but they are also not the gospel. The core hope is unanimous: Christ will return, the dead will be raised, all wrongs will be put right, and a new heaven and new earth will dwell with God's people forever (Revelation 21:1-5).

If you've been afraid lately watching the news, the antidote is not more prediction charts — it's daily faithfulness and a settled hope. See also heaven, hope, and fear.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

2 Peter 3:8-13

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Revelation 21:1-5

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

Matthew 24:42-44

Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Acts 1:6-8

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
