"Fear not" is reportedly the most repeated command in scripture — over 300 times by some counts. The Bible's posture toward fear is neither dismissal ("just have more faith") nor surrender ("this is who you are"). It is steady reminder of who is with you.
Isaiah 41:10 is the verse YouVersion named 2025's verse of the year, partly because of how often people search exactly this kind of fear: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." The verbs are stacked: with, strengthen, help, uphold. God is doing all of them.
Psalm 23:4 — "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me" — gives the underlying truth. The shadow is real. The fear is real. The remedy is presence. Psalm 27:1 names it differently: "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?" The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 Timothy 1:7 names where the fear in a believer is not from: "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." That doesn't mean every fear is demonic — but it does mean fear is not the air God gives you to breathe in. 1 John 4:18 says perfect love casts out fear; not by making the danger disappear, but by reframing what is most true.
If your fear is chronic or panic-level, please consider therapy alongside scripture. The neural patterns of anxiety often need clinical attention. The verses below are companions. See also anxiety, courage, and trust.
