Bible verses about anxiety & worry

Anxiety is one of the most common struggles described in scripture. You are not alone, and God does not leave you in it.

If you've come here typing what does the Bible say about anxiety or bible verses about anxiety, you're in good biblical company. Anxiety is one of the most-named and least-shamed experiences in scripture. The Psalms are full of it. Hannah weeps in such anguish at the temple that the priest assumes she's drunk. David hides in caves with his enemies closing in. Elijah collapses under a juniper tree and asks to die. The Bible's posture toward anxious people is consistently gentle.

The single most-quoted passage on anxiety is Philippians 4:6-7: "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Notice what it does and doesn't say. It doesn't say anxiety is sin. It doesn't say to push through. It says to redirect — bring every thing, specifically, to God in prayer.

Jesus' own teaching in Matthew 6:25-34 takes anxiety seriously enough to address it three times in a single sermon. His argument is not "stop feeling that" — it's "look at the birds." Your Father knows what you need. The kingdom comes first; the rest follows. 1 Peter 5:7 lays the underlying truth: "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." The God who is asking you to release your worry is the God whose care for you is the reason you can.

If you've been carrying generalized anxiety — racing thoughts, physical tightness, the sense something is about to go wrong — please also know scripture is not the only good gift God has provided. Therapy, medication, and trusted friends are part of his care for you, not contradictions of faith. The verses below are companions for the daily work. See also fear, peace, and trust.

Matthew 6:25-27

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
