Bible verses about demons & evil

Scripture acknowledges demons without exaggerating them. The believer in Christ is not their target — they are simply outmatched.

Demons are a real part of the New Testament, and they need neither dismissal nor overemphasis. Jesus regularly cast out demons (Mark 1:23-27), commissioned his disciples to do the same (Luke 10:17), and consistently treated the demonic as defeated rather than fearsome.

The defining text on the believer's standing is 1 John 4:4 — "greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." Colossians 2:15 says Christ "having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it." The cross was a public defeat of every spiritual power that would oppose God's people. James 4:7 reduces the believer's response to a verb: "resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

Where Christians honestly differ: how much daily spiritual warfare looks like exorcism vs. ordinary obedience. The biblical balance is that the demonic is real but not the center; we name it where it is present, but we do not see it under every difficulty. Most often the New Testament's instruction is to pray, walk in the Spirit, and trust Christ — and the rest takes care of itself.

If you are afraid of demonic activity in your life or home, talk to a trusted pastor — not internet videos. The page below offers a short prayer. See also spiritual warfare, fear, and faith.

Mark 1:23-27

And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

Colossians 2:13-15

And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Ephesians 6:11-12

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Luke 10:17-20

And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Reflection

Where in your life have you been more afraid of the enemy than confident in Christ?
