The Holy Spirit is named more than 250 times in scripture and is often the part of God people understand the least. The clearest description Jesus himself gives is in John 14:16-17 — the Spirit is another Comforter, given to dwell in believers forever. He is not an impersonal force; he is the personal presence of God within his people.
Scripture associates several roles with the Spirit. Acts 1:8 ties him to power for witness. John 16:13 calls him the Spirit of truth who guides. Romans 8:14-16 names him as the one who confirms our adoption — "the Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God." Ephesians 1:13-14 calls him the seal and earnest of our inheritance: a deposit guaranteeing what is still ahead.
Two passages map the Spirit's work in practical Christian life. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control — growing over time as a sign of his work. 1 Corinthians 12 describes spiritual gifts distributed for the good of the church.
If you came here searching for how to be filled with the Spirit, scripture's answer is mostly about posture: ask, yield, walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16), don't grieve him (Ephesians 4:30). The page below offers a prayer of welcome — that's a fine place to begin. See also prayer, hearing God, and the gifts of the Spirit.
Verses
John 14:16-17
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Acts 1:8
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Romans 8:14-16
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
1 Corinthians 12:4-11
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
John 16:13
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
Ephesians 1:13-14
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Reflection
Which fruit of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control — are you most asking God to grow in you?
