Bible verses about hearing god

God still speaks. Scripture suggests we hear him less often in dramatic voices than in scripture, conscience, counsel, peace, and providence — and most often through his Word.

Hearing God's voice is one of the most-asked spiritual questions in Christian search engines, and scripture answers it with both reassurance and realism. Jesus says, "My sheep hear my voice" (John 10:27). Hearing God is normal in the Christian life — but the way he speaks is rarely as dramatic as we expect.

The story of Elijah on Horeb is the famous teaching passage (1 Kings 19:11-13). God is not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire — he is in "a still small voice." Scripture's pattern is that God speaks most often through his Word (Psalm 119:105, Hebrews 1:1-2), through prayer and the Spirit's witness (Romans 8:14-16), through wise counsel (Proverbs 15:22), through circumstances, and through the renewed mind (Romans 12:1-2). James 1:5 promises wisdom to anyone who asks.

Two cautions: scripture warns against treating impressions as automatic divine instruction, and against using "God told me" to overrule clear biblical commands or wise counsel. Acts 17:11 commends the Bereans who tested everything against scripture. If something contradicts the Bible, the source is not God.

If you came here trying to discern a decision, the most reliable path is the unglamorous one: pray, read scripture, seek wise counsel from believers who know you, and notice where God gives peace. The page below offers a prayer of listening. See also prayer, wisdom, and decisions.

1 Kings 19:11-13

Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD. Behold, the LORD is about to pass by.” And a great and mighty wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a still, small voice. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But he must ask in faith, without doubting, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
