Angels appear throughout scripture as God's messengers and servants. The Bible doesn't satisfy every curiosity about them, but it tells us enough. Hebrews 1:14 gives the cleanest job description — "ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation." Their role is service to God's purposes and care for God's people.
Scripture shows angels delivering messages (Luke 1:26-38, Acts 12:7), executing judgment (2 Kings 19:35), strengthening Jesus (Luke 22:43), guarding (Psalm 91:11), and bringing answers to prayer through real spiritual conflict (Daniel 10:12-14). Jesus speaks of children having angels who "do always behold the face of my Father" (Matthew 18:10) — the closest scripture comes to the popular idea of guardian angels.
Hebrews 13:2 contains the most charming angelic note in the New Testament: "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." Hospitality matters more than mysticism.
Two cautions scripture sounds clearly: angels are not to be worshiped (Revelation 22:8-9), and a genuine angelic encounter would not contradict the gospel (Galatians 1:8). The Christian's hope is anchored in Christ, not in angelic visitations. See also heaven, protection, and prayer.
Verses
Hebrews 1:14
Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
Psalms 91:11-12
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Matthew 18:10
Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
Hebrews 13:2

Daniel 10:12-14
Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days.
Luke 1:26-38
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
