What does the Bible say about alcohol — and is drinking a sin — are common questions, and scripture's actual answer is more nuanced than either an absolute yes or no. Wine is present from Genesis to Revelation, sometimes celebrated (Psalm 104:15, the wedding at Cana in John 2), sometimes regulated (priests, Nazirites), and consistently warned about (Proverbs 23:29-35).
The one absolute is drunkenness. Ephesians 5:18 — "be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit" — is the clearest line. Galatians 5:21 lists drunkenness among the works of the flesh; 1 Corinthians 6:10 says drunkards will not inherit the kingdom. The pattern is consistent: scripture doesn't legislate against drinking, it legislates against being mastered.
Paul's principle in 1 Corinthians 6:12 applies here as much as anywhere: "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." The Christian's question is not whether alcohol is allowed but whether it is taking up room in your life that should belong to Christ. Romans 14:21 adds the relational dimension: if your freedom causes a brother to stumble, exercise it less.
